Geostationary Satellites

 

The satellite which is at rest w.r.t to the earth is called Geostationary satellite. Such a satellite always stays over the same place above the earth. The orbit of a geostationary satellite is known as parking orbit.

Conditions-

1.The time period of a satellite must be equal to the rotational period of the earth i.e. 24 hours.
2.The direction of the rotation of satellite about its axis must be same as that of the earth i.e. From west to east.
3.The height of geostationary satellite above the surface of earth must be equal to 35930 km or approx. 36000km.
